A new IR Thermal Imager System has been released by Land Instruments International for use in screening for possible SARS-infected persons at airports and other public locales.
By using a compact, accurate and high speed thermal imaging camera, special software and a reference IR calibration source together, the manufacturer claims they can detect people with elevated body temperature above the normal average of 37 Deg. C (98.6 Deg. F).
Those selected by the thermal camera and software system would then be checked with an accurate oral or ear thermometer to determine their true body temperature more accurately.
Authorities in China, Hong Kong and Singapore have already published guidelines for airport passengers and people in other public places to be halted and tested further for possible SARS infection if their body temperature is in excess of 37.5 Deg. C, in Singapore, and 38 Deg. C in China in a effort at ealy detection and isolation of SARS cases.
