Fellbach, Germany — The biggest German Weather Service Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) is convinced:

The ceilometer CHM 15 k shall be the measure of all things when it comes to cloud height measurements in future, and therefore will be used by the DWD. One of the crucial features was the measurement range of 15km as well as the data quality.

Also regarding the renovation and expansion of the maritime measurement network, the DWD relies on a Lufft product: the Ventus-UMB ultrasonic wind sensor.

In the DWD tender, only ultrasonic wind sensors with a closed design were accepted.

In this way they react on the many bird-caused breakdowns of systems with open measurement heads.
